  • You see I'm the lead vocals/rhythm guitarist of my band, and I can play and sing no problem but HOW THE F*CK DO THEY STRUM???
I mean i understand chords when strumming but how do they hit things like:

    e------------------------------------...
    B------------------------------------...
    G----9-9-9-9---8-8-8-8-8-8---6-6-6-6-...
    D----x-x-x-x---x-x-x-x-x-x---x-x-x-x-...
    A----7-7-7-7---6-6-6-6-6-6---4-4-4-4-...
    E------------------------------------...

-I mean live vids and EVERYTHING shows how much emphasis they do in strumming and I'm wondering how the hit things like that/power chords WITHOUT hitting the strings they're not supposed to, ya know??
How do they hit the strings they need with full strumming without hitting the others??

  • Pick up the pleck.....and GO ******* WILD!

  • If you want to do BIG strums you need to mute the strings you don't want to play with your fingers. For example, with those power chords you could hook your thumb over the top of the neck to mute the low E, use your index to hold down the A string and mute the D, and use your ring finger to hold down the G string and mute the B and e, or use your little finger to mute those two. Or, you could use your index finger to mute the low E by holding the A string with your finger a little higher so it pushes into the E and deadens it. Or you could use your middle finger to rest against the E string and deaden it that way. There are loads of ways to do it, and it all comes down to personal preference, what you feel comfortable with and what fits your playing style. But that's what it comes down to: muting.

You would HAVE to mute the D string on those tabs shown somehow, even if you were to strum accurately and only hit those three strings.

  • That comes with practice. You have to mute the strings you don't want to hear and just hit the ones you do. Time and talent are what you need to get that right.

Coinsidently, what you have tabbed there are not "power" chords. And if you are trying to strum those fingerings, I can see why you are having trouble. Apparently you don't understand chords like you say you do.
