Why is clay bad for growing plants?

  • I looked at lots of website and they say the same thing so tell me why. Also don't tell me its bad for sucking in water

  • many clay soils are well endowed with nutrients....but plant's can't use them because many times the clay is acidic....or it's too wet or it's dry or it's coated the roots so they can't breathe right.... all kinds of bad attached to clay... but mix a little compost in there with it... no, make that a LOT of compost, and suddenly it's some of the best soil you can find, short of deep forest soil, that is.....

clay , when dry or partly dry, is very sticky to itself and little new roots have a hard time getting thru it.... so they will travel the least difficult path, which is too often inside the planting hole....

the planting hole too often is the only place where the soil is broken up, so rain or water tends to stay in the hole like it's a bowl... and thus drown the plant..... or, the clay was wet, but now is dry, like in our drought, and has turned to brick... so the roots cannot breathe in that , either....

people will make the mistake of mixing in sand, or peat moss.... that makes bricks, too.... and gives NO nutrient value in the soil, either... compost, organic matter, is the cure for clay soil.... I've been working my red clay now for ten years... and I was thrilled this week, when I dug up a volunteer plant to give away and found good brown forest looking soil there!!!..... I WIN!!!.... ooops.. sorry.. got carried away there.....

  • Doesn't promote good drainage. If you have clay soil, mix in compost or regular top soil and add gravel here and there to help drainage.

  • Water doesn't penetrate the soil very well, roots can't breath, and no nutrients. It needs to have lime mixed in with it to have any success at all. I built huge flower boxes on top of the clay and filled them with top soil about 10 years ago and have had very good luck with my plants every year.

  • No nutritional value for plants and most importantly, roots will rot because water does not seep into ground quickly. Also, worms which nourish dirt for plants do not live in clay.

  • A clay soil is very poor for drainage... most plants will require some drainage.
