Can you grow carnivorous plants in artificial sunlight?

  • I want to put a venus flytrap and a couple pitcher plants in with my pacman frog. Will they be able to survive with the same UV lights my frog uses?

  • Yes, you can grow them under artificial lights. I have grown some of my Venus Fly Traps under artificial lights and they did quite well in the short term. I've never left them under lights for more than a few months at a time however. Venus Fly Traps and pitcher plants do best grown outdoors in full sunlight.

  • The UV lights may not produce sufficient intensity of light to keep the insectivorous plants healthy. You can try it and if the plants appear to be declining, you could add an additional light source that mimics natural sunlight.
